Garden update!!!

March 2026 Mawrth

March started mildly but also felt frozen for much of the month.

This was a good time to prune the raspberry bush that had grown too tall and spread too much in 2025. The canes were cute to about 3ft and then the offcuts put into water to try to propagate.

The suckers that spread throughout the tree bed were dug up and potted to be given away.

The same happened with some mint that was in a herb bed. Something more quietly growing could be put in the bed instead.

Everything in the garden in March was slowly waking up and showing small signs of spring. Like these blackthorn blossoms.

Tawhida and I pruned the rosemary that had started to grow over the border of the herb bed and put the offcuts in water to see if they would root. We also cut some Claytonia and Rocket to take home to have with our dinners.

Near the end of March, the weather was much milder and the perfect time to plant some seeds.

In April, everything has exploded into leaf and blossom, ready to soak up the spring rays.

The seedlings are doing very well and almost ready to be transplanted into bigger pots or beds.

The flower mixes are on their way too.

The peas and beans have settled in and are starting to show their leaves from the soil but the claytonia next to them is getting a bit out of hand. It flowered and it probably past its best and needs to be removed to make way for some of the seedlings.

Braeval street garden is a lovely relaxing place to visit. It feels like a private space, tucked away from the busy surrounding streets. It feels like it has its own climate and fresh air.

There are plenty of insects that call the garden their home and we have planted flowers that the bees love, like Comfrey.

Every corner has something interesting in whether it’s a log pile for the woodlice, a library of all things nature, a wildflower or herb, or a native tree.

It’s the perfect place to create in or to just do nothing and enjoy looking at all the textures of the flowers, herbs, and trees.
