Artist Profiles - Haadiyah - Artist and Calligrapher

The Flow of Faith and Form

Haadiyah is a calligraphy artist whose work is deeply rooted in Islamic art and spirituality. She specialises in Arabic calligraphy and is currently pursuing mastery through the ijazah system, which is the traditional chain of learning in Islamic calligraphy that connects her to centuries of artistry and scholarship. Her creative world is one of harmony, softness, and presence, where natural materials, flowing lines, and deep spiritual intention come together. Through her work, she seeks to create a space of harmony and tranquility, inviting others to experience the beauty of this timeless art form.

Creative Practice & Style

Haadiyah’s practice blends traditional Arabic calligraphy with the fluidity of watercolour painting, creating works that are both intricate and ethereal. She is invested in the Thuluth script often called the mother of Arabic scripts and continues to study its anatomy and structure under the guidance of experienced teachers. Alongside this, she is drawn to the Maghribi style, which is her personal favourite for its soft geometry and gentle curves.

She describes her style as a meeting point between harmony, symmetry, and softness, a visual reflection of her personality and spiritual outlook. Unlike rigid geometric compositions, her work favours a more organic balance, inspired by Andalusian and Moroccan art and the flowing, interconnected nature of Islamic spirituality.

Inspiration & Influences

Haadiyah’s work is deeply rooted in Islamic spirituality and the profound symbolism of Arabic letters. To her, each letter holds more than linguistic meaning,it embodies history, form, and spiritual resonance. Writing becomes a reflective process, where the gesture of shaping each letter is as significant as the message itself. The Qur’anic verses she chooses are deeply personal; she believes that when one is emotionally and spiritually connected to an ayah, adorning it through calligraphy becomes an intimate form of devotion.

Nature is also a constant source of inspiration. A keen gardener with her own allotment, Haadiyah finds her colour palette in the greens of leaves, the muted tones of soil, and the natural textures around her. She works with eco-friendly materials such as bamboo pens, handmade ink, and natural pigments, creating art that is not only beautiful but environmentally conscious.

Moments in the Creative Process

For Haadiyah, the most meaningful moments in her practice are those of full presence, immersed in the flow of ink and brush, held in uninterrupted focus. These are the works she is most proud of: the ones where self-judgment quiets and creativity moves freely. She acknowledges that some pieces carry more of her own critique, but sees this as part of the learning journey, a reminder that the creative process is as much about patience and growth as it is about the finished piece.

Through her work, Haadiyah wants people to feel the harmony and peace that comes from patient and intentional creation. Her art reminds viewers that spirituality and creativity can intertwine seamlessly, and that beauty lies as much in the process as in the final form. Calligraphy, for her, is a way of being present in the moment, honouring the sacredness of the words, and offering them back to the world in a form that reflects their depth.

Current & Future Directions

Haadiyah is steadily working towards earning her ijazah in calligraphy, a significant milestone that marks not an endpoint, but the beginning of a new chapter filled with deeper study and the refinement of her skills. This achievement symbolises her commitment to mastering the art form with discipline and reverence. Alongside this journey, she is also expanding her expertise in the Maghribi script, a style she holds in high regard for its unique elegance and historical richness. Her growing knowledge of the script reflects both her respect for tradition and her desire to explore diverse expressions within Islamic calligraphy.

Her future plans include opening an Etsy shop, offering high-quality prints of her artwork/art pieces so that others can bring a touch of spiritual beauty into their homes. She is also exploring new materials and techniques, staying committed to experimentation as a way to keep her creativity revitalised.

Philosophy & Advice

Haadiyah encourages fellow creatives to give themselves time and space to be students and to embrace the learning process without rushing to the finish line. She believes in following curiosity rather than boxing yourself into one style or medium, and sees experimentation as essential to keeping creativity alive. Whether it’s carving, trying a new script, or introducing unexpected colours, she finds joy in switching things up and discovering new ways of working.
